I'm finding it difficult to dredge up any dislike for the actions of JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater.

I'm reminded of what Joan Collins, writing in the Guardian, called "The awful pervasive disregard that we have for civility today." Calling Miss Manners! What's become of us?

We've all been on an airplane with that woman who began this brouhaha. You know her: she's the person for whom the rules don't apply. She's not just winging around on JetBlue either. She's cutting in front of you in grocery store lines and at customer service desks. She's the surly, disinterested service industry worker. Common courtesy is thin on the ground these days.

What sort of people are we that we'll allow the sort of disregard and rudeness that drove Mr. Slater to inflate the slide and leave? Yes: Why do we allow it. While Mr. Slater may have snapped and handled the confrontation in a less than professional way, he did what we all should do. Push back. If someone is inconsiderate or rude they need to be told. Like the fellow Facebooker last night who called me "stupid" and "brain damaged" when I wouldn't give in and agree with him.

Civility is at issue and we must put forth some effort to restore it. Perhaps not with the same pizazz shown by Mr. Slater but a simple statement of "please don't talk to me in that manner," or "please remember be respectful of other people," or "the rules apply to everyone." This would not be wrong, and I call all of you to join me. Further, the service industry would do well to not only allow but require their employees to softly remind their gentle customers to mind their manners. After all, if they'll do it to a clerk they'll do it to your other customers. Turnabout is fair play on this issue; customers have obligation to remind the people waiting on them to remember their manners as well.

Yes, Steven Slater broke the law. Numerous ones I'm sure. Yes, in the interest of an orderly society he must answer for them. But slap him on the wrist I say. Society had this coming.

One incumbent down... Sen. Bob Bennett (R-UT)...

Bennett was a distant third in the second round of voting among nearly 3,500 delegates, netting about 27 percent of the vote.

Wiping away tears, Bennett called the political atmosphere "toxic" and said it's, "Clear some of the votes I've cast have added to that toxic environment, looking back with one or two minor exceptions, I wouldn't cast any any differently, even if I knew it would cost me my career."

The three-term senator was targeted by Tea Party activists and other groups for supporting the first traunch of TARP, or Troubled Assets Relief Program.

Bennett, 76, is the first incumbent to lose his seat in Washington this year.

An elderly couple was attacked last Monday when trying to park their car in the Swedish town of Landskrona.

The couple were trying to park, but another car was in their way. They honked and parked. But the young man (23) in the other car rolled down his window and asked why they honked. An altercation started. The young man became so upset, he threw the car door on the 71 year old man, Sven, who fell down. The young man then started beating the 71 year old.

The older man's 78 year old wife, Inger, tried to intervene, but was punched in the face and fainted.

The younger man fled in his car. The elderly couple were brought to the hospital. The 71 year was in shock and had injuries to his face and back. The 78 year old was brought to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. She died of her injuries Wednesday.

I'm sorry? I don't think I heard that correctly? THEY fear violence? Can someone name me the last attack on an elderly Muslim couple parking their car? What about a Muslim cartoonist having his home invaded by an angry Christian or Jew wielding an axe because he was upset at a political cartoon? When was the last Muslim filmmaker stabbed to death in the street for making a movie critical of the Amish or Lutherans? Muslims constantly wail about their fear of backlash (over their OWN ACTS mind you) yet seem to be the only ones actually perpetrating the sort of violence they claim they're afraid of experiencing. First, I offer my prayers for a complete and full recovery for Natoma Canfield. But it would be remiss not to mention (as the President opted not too) that she is in the hospital getting the treatment she needs and is all but certain to get financial assistance through the hospital or charity group and/or Medicaid. And the Cleveland Clinic is not going to force her to pay or die, nor choose between her home or medical treatment.

Natoma Canfield, the cancer-stricken woman who has become a centerpiece of President Obama's push for health care reform, will not lose her home over her medical bills and will probably qualify for financial aid, a top official at the Cleveland medical center treating her told FoxNews.com. “She may be eligible for state Medicaid … and/or she will be eligible for charity (care) of some form or type. … In my personal opinion, she will be eligible for something,” he said, adding that Canfield should not be worried about losing her home.

“Cleveland Clinic will not put a lien on her home,” he said. A Haitian attorney says 10 Americans detained in Haiti for trying to take 33 children out of the country after the Jan. 12 earthquake have been charged with child kidnapping.

Edwin Coq says the Americans also are charged with criminal association. The 10 appeared in court Thursday and were whisked away to a jail in Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince.

If health care passes, but then gets repealed, the President wins. If health care passes, and Democrat Senators don’t get reelected, the President wins. If health care passes, and the House switches to Republican, the President wins. If more Americans are without health care, the President wins.

This bill is as empty as the President himself. It is meaningless, at this point. Everyone hates it and not because that’s what happens when big bills get passed. Investigators trying to solve the mystery of a census taker found hanging from a tree with the word "fed" scrawled on his chest are examining whether he manipulated the scene in order to conceal a suicide and make a life insurance claim possible for his son, law enforcement officials told The Associated Press.

The dead man's son, Josh Sparkman, said in an interview with the AP that he found paperwork for the private life insurance policy among the personal files of his father, Bill Sparkman, but wasn't sure of the amount or when it was taken out. He said authorities have told him nothing about the case and haven't produced a death certificate, which is usually needed to make an insurance claim.

Two law enforcement officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case, said investigators were trying to determine whether Bill Sparkman committed suicide but altered the scene to make it look like a homicide, allowing his son to collect.

Mr. Nelson,

I would like to let you know that I don't need health insurance. What I need, and what you in Washington don't seem to give a damn about, is a job. While Democrats have been dithering, conning and scheming on how best to destroy health insurance and care in this country, millions of people like me are unemployed.

We neither want nor need health insurance which you wouldn't subject yourself or your family to. What we want and need are jobs so we can choose what insurance we want amongst other things. Perhaps you weren't aware, but the unemployment rate is above 10% now with real unemployment at LEAST 17% or higher. Perhaps you lost track and didn't realize that the holidays are coming up. We can't afford to spend money on holiday dining and gift giving. It would be nice to make $174.000 a year with government retirement and benefits.

We do don't want trillions of dollars in new spending, even more massive debt or layers upon layers of new bureaucracies. What we need is government to foster an environment where businesses can get back to what they do and hire people again. We don't need bailouts or unaccountable czars dictating salaries. We don't need a President or Congress threatening companies who dare to make a profit. Nor do we need a President or Congress trashing our own country and driving away foreign investors nor providing favoritism and kickbacks to the unions.

Mr. Nelson, I have been unemployed since 2 February. I immediately applied for unemployment. I received two letters telling me that I qualified and how much I should expect. The day before I was to begin claiming my weeks, I received a letter from the great state of Florida advising me that I did not qualify. I've tried finding work and even tried work-from-home opportunities. Publix isn't hiring and, for some reason, I was turned down at Wal-Mart.

Fortunately, I'm staying with my parents, so room and board isn't an issue. My bank account is closed because I accidentally overdrew and couldn't pay it back. I've borrowed money from a friend, but have no way of paying it back. I feel worse about that debt than any other. My truck hasn't worked since the first week in July. I have no money to get it fixed.

Mr. Nelson, government run health insurance is not going to do me a damn bit of good. What I want and need, as well as millions of other Americans, is a job. I need to pay my debts and get my truck repaired. A job is what I need to restore my confidence and self worth. Friends and family are asking what I want for Christmas. How can I tell them what I want when I have no way of giving to them?

Americans have told our President and our Congress, who work for US that we don't want the mess that was passed in the House. We don't want it and we don't need it. You've been screwing around wasting time while millions of Americans lose their jobs.

We're hurting out here, Mr. Nelson. We don't have the luxury of six-figure incomes or flying off to work or wherever we want. We don't have the luxury of getting paid to waste time and money. We're hurting out here, Mr. Nelson. Don't you think it's about damn time you grabbed your gear and did something to actually help your employers?

What Ted Kennedy Wants

Senator Ted Kennedy, who is gravely ill with brain cancer, has sent a letter to Massachusetts lawmakers requesting a change in the state law that determines how his Senate seat would be filled if it became vacant before his eighth full term ends in 2012. Current law mandates that a special election be held at least 145 days after the seat becomes available. Mr. Kennedy is concerned that such a delay could leave his fellow Democrats in the Senate one vote short of a filibuster-proof majority for months while a special election takes place.

"I therefore am writing to urge you to work together to amend the law through the normal legislative process to provide for a temporary gubernatorial appointment until the special election occurs," writes the Senator. [...]

What Mr. Kennedy doesn't volunteer is that he orchestrated the 2004 succession law revision that now requires a special election, and for similarly partisan reasons. John Kerry, the other Senator from the state, was running for President in 2004, and Mr. Kennedy wanted the law changed so the Republican Governor at the time, Mitt Romney, could not name Mr. Kerry's replacement.

The incoming president of the Canadian Medical Association says this country's health-care system is sick and doctors need to develop a plan to cure it.

Dr. Anne Doig says patients are getting less than optimal care and she adds that physicians from across the country - who will gather in Saskatoon on Sunday for their annual meeting - recognize that changes must be made.

"We all agree that the system is imploding, we all agree that things are more precarious than perhaps Canadians realize," Doing said in an interview with The Canadian Press.

Now, the Canadian doctors aren't calling for an end to their "universal" - but not readily available and crumbling - health care system, but the changes proposed bring them closer to our way. We should take note of that. One other thing, BigDog (blogging at RightWingSparkle) warns us not to get complacent just because it seems we've won a couple of victories in this fight against statism.

The president seemed like a man long celebrated as being very good at politics—the swift rise, the astute reading of a varied electorate—who is finding out day by day that he isn't actually all that good at it. In this sense he does seem reminiscent of Jimmy Carter, who was brilliant at becoming president but not being president. (Actually a lot of them are like that these days.)

Also, something odd. When Mr. Obama stays above the fray, above the nitty-gritty of specifics, when he confines his comments on health care to broad terms, he more and more seems . . . pretty slippery. In the town hall he seemed aware of this, and he tried to be very specific about the need for this aspect of a plan, and the history behind that proposal. And yet he seemed even more slippery. When he took refuge in the small pieces of his argument, he lost the major threads; when he addressed the major threads, he seemed almost to be conceding that the specifics don't hold.

When you seem slippery both in the abstract and the particular, you are in trouble.

Good column by Peggy Noonan. It would be better if she hadn't spent so much time beguiled with Obama during the campaign, but I guess she called it as she saw it. At least she's admitting it ain't panning out.

Dear White House Snitch Commissar (flag@whitehouse.gov),

I wish to turn myself in. I have negative feelings and thoughts about the health care legislation which means I obviously have no idea what's good for me. I realize now that I should leave highly personal health care decisions to the federal government instead. While I'm at it, I should also admit that I was and still am against the stimulus. I admit now that the federal government will probably spend my money better than I ever could.

I'd also like to turn in my friends and relatives, from whom I have heard what you have called "disinformation," directly contradicting what the administration has been telling us. They embarrass themselves with their blatant opposition to President Obama and the Democratic Party. They flaunt their First Amendment rights as though they are unalienable!

While I'm at it, I should mention that my pharmacist was saying negative things about the health care legislation. I also heard two ladies discussing it at the grocery store the other day with obvious reservations. I didn't get their names, but the store is in Greenville on Verdae Boulevard. My dentist, hair stylist and even a few neighbors have all been saying how they think the legislation is a bad idea. It's all been in casual conversations, but I think that counts. I don't think my dog is wild about the plan either, but she drinks from mud puddles so I'll cut her some slack.

I wish to thank you for what you're doing. People who have no idea what's good for them may never admit it, so turning them in is really the only option. According to recent polls, around 52% of the United States' citizenry are such people, so you've got a lot of work to do.

Here's a comment that I posted on a thread about the Tampa Town Hall meeting. It was in response to the usual hysterical liberal comments.

Some thoughts.

A lot of people are happy with Medicare & Medicaid. Both are rife with fraud and overages. Between Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security etc., we are in the red to the tune of $53 BILLION. What's more, neither Medicare nor Medicaid pay 100% of anything. What they don't pay are passed on to people with private insurance or can pay for themselves. Instead of adding a few trillion more in debt, why not reform what we have so it meets our needs?

It's abundantly clear that Obamacare isn't about providing health care. If health care was such a high priority that we need it NOW, why wasn't it addressed in the porkulus bill? How many people could have been helped with that $800 billion? How about the bailouts of the auto companies? That was supposed to prevent them from going bankrupt and they went bankrupt anyway. How many people could have been helped with the money spent on the CARS program? Seems to me that the alleged 47 million without insurance got to take a back seat to Chairman Obama repaying the unions and trial lawyers who spent beau coup cash to get him elected.

If health care is so important, why didn't it just get passed? The libs love to crow that they have all the votes in Congress. What stopped them?

Many have whined and blamed Republicans, but the REALITY is that there are plenty of Democrats in the tea party groups. There's plenty of Democrats opposed to Obamacare. Libs are calling us "racist", but that would have to include the blacks, Hispanics, Asians etc. who are opposed to this. What kind of sense does that make? Either that's the only talking points you know, or you have such a limited worldview and the reality just doesn't fit the template you or somebody else has created.

Libs keep popping off about the insurance companies paying people to oppose Obamacare. Problem is, they just can't provide any evidence or even name the companies involved. One would think that if they were so sure of it, they would be able to do so with ease. Oh and those eeeeeevil "Big Corporations" are the ones who hire, pay and provide health insurance to millions of Americans. Shoot your mouth off about them like the Big Idiot In Chief does and they start laying off people or cutting back on benefits because they want to make sure they can afford the punitive taxes to come.

Many complain about a lack of democracy and people can't get informed. How can you become informed if you're not allowed access by union thugs? I've talked to several people here in the Tampa area who were there. They said there were no problems until people were denied access to what was going on in the conference room. Wouldn't you be pi**ed off if you went to one of these things and were told you weren't allowed to participate? How does one get informed when the meetings are full of union thugs?

Oh and those rich you keep trashing? They're the ones who pay the most taxes. They also provide jobs, salaries, insurance etc. In reality, when you rail about the rich and eeeevil corporations, you're railing against jobs, salaries and insurance.

I could have gone on, but I'm tired.

I sent an e-mail the other day to Sen. Nelson. To be honest, I can't remember right now what the gist was, but it was about oil speculators. As you may know, it can take a bit for a representative to get back to you and I didn't copy my message to him. So here's his reply:

Dear Mr. Schellinger:

Thank you for contacting me about the price of gasoline. The price run-ups in the past few years are inexcusable and intolerable.

To stabilize gas prices, we must rein in unbridled and unregulated speculators. Gas prices fluctuate wildly because speculators, who behave like condo-flippers, are allowed to buy and resell oil contracts. Until we stop that, we'll continue to be gouged at the pump. I recently reintroduced S. 221, which would ban unregulated speculation by oil traders and bring gas prices back down to earth.

Most importantly, we need to break our addiction to foreign oil and switch to alternative fuels.

Thirty years ago, in the wake of gas shortages and long lines at the pump, the President declared the need for the U.S. to become energy independent. Unfortunately, little has been done since. And having only three percent of the world's oil reserves while we consume 33% of the world's oil production means America cannot drill its way out of this crisis.

We must develop alternative fuels--like ethanol-- and make it from things we don't eat. And we need to do it with the same sense of urgency and focus that President Kennedy brought to landing on the moon. Until we've done this, we need to conserve as much oil as possible by raising fuel-efficiency standards for all vehicles and further increasing the production of hybrid cars.

I appreciate your thoughts on this issue. And I will continue to support measures that provide our nation with real alternatives to our reliance on oil.

To which I replied today:

However, the CFTC found that the high prices last year were due to Supply & Demand. They also found that "unregulated speculators" were responsible for keeping prices more stable. If "unregulated speculators" were responsible for the high prices, why is oil down to $71.80? Why did it go down?

You also demand higher fuel efficiency standards. Yet the National Academy of Sciences determined that increased CAFE standards contributes an additional 3,200 deaths per year on our roadways.

Indeed. We need to break our addiction to foreign oil which is why we need to drill for our own. That's also why we're moving on with tar sands on BLM property. We need the oil NOW while we come up with realistic, practical and affordable alternative fuels. If we aren't already, we need to chanel the corn ethanol pork to more realistic goals.

What's more, another reality is that the "evil" oil companies have spent more on the federal government on alternative fuels over the last several years. We need to end our State control over private businesses, cut the red tape, cut all the absurd regulations and let them do what the do: supplying the American people with the fuel they need. There's no mandate directing Congress or the White House to run the energy or any other sector of our economy. Therefore you need to get out of the way.

So far as I can tell from your response is that your legislation actually calls for higher gas prices and more American deaths on the highway. Now why do we want that?

I know that he likes to use the left's meme that any opposition to their ideas is pushing for the "status quo". I think Americans would gladly switch to an alternative fuel, but I don't think we're anywhere near having one that's realistic. We shouldn't be castrating ourselves in the meantime either.

I'm a bit tired of this bullshit about having to find a scape goat for high gasoline prices. First it was the oil company execs. Then it was Bush. Then it was OPEC. Then it was Bush, again, for daring to shore up the stockpiles while we're at war. Then it was the speculators etc. etc. etc. It's absurd and it's irresponsible what the Statists are doing: ginning up hatred for things that have nothing to do with the prices. I should have told him that.
