"Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed."
Iwo Jima: 65th Anniversary
Monday, February 22, 2010
Missed this on Friday and shame on me for letting the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima slip past. The month long battle saw some of the worst fighting of WWII. The Japanese on the island were an intractable foe. Of the 22,786 Japanese soldiers entrenched on the island, 21,570 died fighting or by ritual suicide. For most Americans the battle is symbolized by the Joe Rosenthal photograph taken on February 23, 1945. It depicts five United States Marines and a U.S. Navy corpsman raising the flag of the United States on Mount Suribachi. We owe the Greatest Generation of Americans a debt to large to repay: today take a moment and remember the soldiers who died on small island and thank them for the liberty you enjoy every day.

WNC Iwo Jima Veteran Wants Youths To Understand The True Meaning Of Casualties Of War
Edward Lannigan has a box full of medals that testify to his heroic service in the Pacific Theater during World War II, including his presence at Iwo Jima, the bloodiest battle in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps. The battle began 65 years ago this weekend.
In Lannigan's box are two Purple Hearts, a Silver Medal, two presidential citations and other awards attached to fading ribbons, small but poignant recognition of the bravery of a young man — a boy, really — who would return home from war with shrapnel in his skull and only one functional arm and hand.
But the medals are not on display. They live inside the box in a dark corner of the bottom drawer of the desk in his study.
There are many veterans who proudly showcase their war-related decorations. Lannigan is not one of them.

House Weighs Health Bill

...the battle lines have hardened as Democratic leaders predicted passage of the House bill and GOP leaders vowed to derail it.... the hour of destruction, or manly opposition to the machinations of tyranny, stares you in the face. Every friend to his country, to himself and posterity ... is now called upon ... to make a united and successful resistance to this last, worst, and most destructive measure of administration. ~ Broadsheets printed in the run-up to the Boston Tea Party
"We will pass health care reform," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said after Obama's visit to Capitol Hill.
Meanwhile, House Minority Leader John Boehner vowed to do everything he can to "stop this from becoming law."
"The American people do not want this," he said. "We're going to do everything we can to make sure this does not happen."
House Minority Whip Eric Cantor said Democrats are joining their side to vote against the bill.

Mark Steyn: No turning back from Obamacare
Read more...
...health care is the fastest way to a permanent left-of-center political culture. That's its attraction for an ambitious president: It redefines the relationship between the citizen and the state in a way that hands all the advantages to statists – to those who believe government has a legitimate right to regulate human affairs in every particular. [...]Amen...
Freedom is messy. In free societies, people will fall through the cracks – drink too much, eat too much, buy unaffordable homes, fail to make prudent provision for health care and much else. But the price of being relieved of all those tiresome choices by a benign paternal government is far too high.
Government health care would be wrong even if it "controlled costs." It's a liberty issue. I'd rather be free to choose, even if I make the wrong choices.

Down is Up, Unfair is Fair and Ignorance is Bliss

I woke up in the middle of the night and realized the trick.Victoria, I think you're absolutely correct. Hitler was a statist. Stalin was a statist. Obama and today's leftists (masquerading as "liberal") are statists. They all place the sovereignty of "The State" over the individual. They all eschew individual liberty. If that means you or I need to do without electricity for 10 hours a day - so be it. If that means the State needs 99% of your income in order to "do good" - so be it. If that means a baby, or the sick, or the old need to die for the good of the State - so be it. They won't ever say it in such blunt terms, but that's what their "welfare" and "choices" and "compassion" boil down to.
You see, evil doesn’t just show up. It disguises itself as something nice; so you’ll let it in. It tricks you.
Murdering babies is called Pro-Choice. Unfair Censorship is called The Fairness Doctrine. Outlandish Taxes and the Death of Freedom is called Cap & Trade. Sounds like Fish & Chips. You gotta figure out the trick.

A Thought Occurs....
Tuesday, April 28, 2009
If the Tax Day Tea Parties had been a top-down operation, as many of the liberals claim, I kinda doubt that they would have been put together as fast as they were. I could be wrong, but that's my sense on it.
Furthermore, I'm fairly certain they wouldn't have taken place in as many small towns as they did. Here in central Florida, for example, I would imagine they would've taken place in Tampa, Orlando and Daytona. Lakeland, maybe. Lithia and Bartow, more than likely not.
So I think that with just a casual glance, one can find that the liberal claim is, as usual, bullshit.

On the American Clean Energy & Security Act:
“I believe this legislation has the moral significance equivalent to that of the civil rights legislation of the 1960s and the Marshall Plan of the late 1940s,” Gore declares in his written testimony. “By repowering America with a transition to a clean energy economy and ending our dangerous over-reliance on carbon based fuels, this bill will simultaneously address the climate crisis, the economic crisis, and the national security threats that stem from our dependence on foreign oil.”
This should be considered an outrage and an insult to the American people, but it won't.
Aside from the obvious outrage of comparison to the civil rights legislation, it was free markets which rebuilt Europe after WWII. The Marshall Plan had little to do with it. Further, if the liberals actually gave a crap about clean energy and the economy, they'd allow for the construction (and employment required) of nuclear power facilities.

Poor little Susan Roesgen had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day!
Seriously though - as someone pointed out - wouldn't people have to actually watch CNN in order to hate it?
CNN correspondent Susan Roesgen could barely get through her live shot at the Chicago tea party this afternoon. Over shouts of, "You're not a reporter," Roesgen quickly wrapped up an interview with an attendee, then said, "I think you get the general tenor of this. It's anti-government, anti-CNN since this is highly promoted by the right-wing conservative network Fox."
Seriously though - as someone pointed out - wouldn't people have to actually watch CNN in order to hate it?
UPDATE via Chad:
.... which is actually via Ace. The vid below has some behind the scenes footage of what happened after Ms. Roesgen got her "Obama = Fascist" panties smoothed out and put back in place.
Next time I'm in Chi-Town, I need to buy that chick beer.

Mexico Slams Burger King For 'Whopper' Of An Insult
I gotta say though, Mexico has some nerve considering this, and this, and this, and this.
Mexicans: they can dish it out, but they can't take it. My advice? Tienes que relajar, amigos.

Mexico is protesting what it says is a whopper of an insult.Hahahahahaha! I must disagree; I think BK quite properly used the "stereotyped image of a Mexican".
An advertisement for Burger King's chili-flavored "Texican" burger that has run in Europe shows a small wrestler dressed in a cape resembling a Mexican flag. The wrestler teams up with a lanky American cowboy twice his height to illustrate the cross-border blend of flavors.
"The taste of Texas with a little spicy Mexican," a narrator's voice says.
The much-taller cowboy boosts the wrestler up to reach high shelves and clean tall windows, while the Mexican helps the cowboy open a jar.
Mexico's ambassador to Spain said Monday he has written a letter to Burger King's offices in that nation objecting to the ad and asking that it be removed. Jorge Zermeno told Radio Formula that the ads "improperly use the stereotyped image of a Mexican."
I gotta say though, Mexico has some nerve considering this, and this, and this, and this.
