Iwo Jima: 65th Anniversary

Monday, February 22, 2010

Missed this on Friday and shame on me for letting the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima slip past. The month long battle saw some of the worst fighting of WWII. The Japanese on the island were an intractable foe. Of the 22,786 Japanese soldiers entrenched on the island, 21,570 died fighting or by ritual suicide. For most Americans the battle is symbolized by the Joe Rosenthal photograph taken on February 23, 1945. It depicts five United States Marines and a U.S. Navy corpsman raising the flag of the United States on Mount Suribachi. We owe the Greatest Generation of Americans a debt to large to repay: today take a moment and remember the soldiers who died on small island and thank them for the liberty you enjoy every day.

WNC Iwo Jima Veteran Wants Youths To Understand The True Meaning Of Casualties Of War
Edward Lannigan has a box full of medals that testify to his heroic service in the Pacific Theater during World War II, including his presence at Iwo Jima, the bloodiest battle in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps. The battle began 65 years ago this weekend.

In Lannigan's box are two Purple Hearts, a Silver Medal, two presidential citations and other awards attached to fading ribbons, small but poignant recognition of the bravery of a young man — a boy, really — who would return home from war with shrapnel in his skull and only one functional arm and hand.

But the medals are not on display. They live inside the box in a dark corner of the bottom drawer of the desk in his study.

There are many veterans who proudly showcase their war-related decorations. Lannigan is not one of them.

Mahmoud the Not So Mysterious

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

On Fox News Sunday, Obama's National Security Adviser, General Jim Jones said that the reasons for Iran's refusal to accept the really great offer on the table from the IAEA and prove it wants nuclear technology for peaceful purposes only is "mysterious." Huh? It's about as "mysterious" as one of Charlie Sheen's female companions showing up to lunch with a black eye and chipped tooth.

The "Chocolate City" Has A Marshmallow On Top

New Orleans elects first white mayor in over 30 years
Landrieu, who lost to Nagin in a runoff four years ago, was a welcome change for some voters who grew frustrated with the city’s current mayor. Little known outside New Orleans before Katrina, Nagin became a central, and sometimes controversial figure, in the city’s struggle to recover. Though he won re-election as he courted black voters in the 2006 campaign. Nagin notoriously pledged after the hurricane that New Orleans would be a “chocolate city” again, offending many whites.

Polls showed his popularity fell sharply in the years after the storm.

10 Americans in Haiti Charged With Child Kidnapping
A Haitian attorney says 10 Americans detained in Haiti for trying to take 33 children out of the country after the Jan. 12 earthquake have been charged with child kidnapping.

Edwin Coq says the Americans also are charged with criminal association. The 10 appeared in court Thursday and were whisked away to a jail in Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince.

Coq attended the session and has represented the group here.
Oh my. It seems we've misplaced some of those foreign aid checks with all the zeros on them. Perhaps some more reasonable charges would help us find them...

The Liberal Mind(less)set

John Hawkins : Seven Huge Flaws in the Way Liberals Think - Townhall.com

I think # 5 gets to heart of the flawed Modern Liberal mind. The links were added by me...
5) Liberals believe merely being liberal makes them good people. Liberals who're obsessed with money think they're compassionate because they give away other people's tax dollars. They believe they care more about the earth than other people, even as they fly around in private jets*, because they babble on about global warming. They can be dumb as a rock, but believe they're smarter than most other people because they're liberals. In other words, in the minds of most liberals, liberalism is an all-purpose substitute for actual virtue instead of just another political philosophy.

*Yes, I'm aware that Pelosi uses a jet provided by the military, but the principle is the same because she treats it like her personal property.
While we most certainly should do good and help people, we must be careful to do so in a substantive way - with mind as well as heart. Otherwise our good intentions only serve as more asphalt on the road to hell. Hell for us and the ones we want to assist.

Heisman Trophy Winner Tim Tebow Celebrates Life, MSM Whines About "Choice"

Okay all of you offended women's "rights" groups. If you don't like this ad then run a counter "Celebrate Suction Aspiration & Saline Poisoning" ad. Everyone get's to express their opinion. That's how America works. How America doesn't work is that you do NOT get live your life without being offended. Grow up and get used to it. And keep in mind that Mrs. Tebow did what you consider to be a holy sacrament of Modern Liberalism: she made her own choice. Your ranting makes it look like you want to silence her because - in your opinion - she made the "wrong" choice.

Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said THIS about Ted Kennedy's Senate seat..."Why would you hand the keys to the car back to the same guys whose policies drove the economy into the ditch and then walked away from the scene of the accident?"
Mary Jo Kopechne was unavailable for comment.

Elderly and Abandoned, 85 Haitians Await Death

Dear God. We'll surely have to answer for ever letting our neighbors come to such a state that this earthquake could cause such horror. We aren't responsible for their nation's failure, but we are responsible for ignoring it or giving it countenance. Forgive us.

The Earthquake in Haiti

Thursday, January 14, 2010

Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.' ~ Matthew 25:37-40

Thousands Feared Dead In Haiti Quake
Haitians piled bodies along the devastated streets of their capital Wednesday after a powerful earthquake flattened the president's palace, the cathedral, hospitals, schools, the main prison and whole neighborhoods. Officials feared hundreds of thousands may have perished but there was no firm count.
We should always remember how fortunate and blessed we are to live in America. Those blessings will be squandered if we don't respond to the tragedy in Haiti with all our considerable might. God expects much from us when it comes to helping the least of our brothers and sisters. In most cases sending a donation is as easy as sending a text message. If we can waste time online with drivel we can spend a few seconds using our technology to help. Red Cross, Yéle Haiti, Doctors Without Borders.

Mark McGwire Admits Using Steroids

This is about as "surprising" as Michael Stipe admitting he's gay. About as "shocking" as Obama's speech on terrorism. About as "staggering" as a Kennedy at happy hour. About as "flabbergasting" as finding a Muslim in al Qaeda. About as "astonishing" as Ann Coulter saying something hyperbolic. You get the picture.

Back To The Fifties With Harry "Jim Crow" Reid

Saturday, January 9, 2010

Remember this post where I asked Would Harry Reid Try To Get Obama's Attention By Yelling "Hey Negro"?

Well apparently he would!
The top Democrat in the U.S. Senate apologized on Saturday for comments he made about Barack Obama's race during the 2008 presidential bid and are quoted in a yet-to-be-released book about the campaign.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada described in private then-Sen. Barack Obama as "light skinned" and "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one." Obama is the nation's first African-American president.
And Joe Biden says "Don't forget clean, Harry! He's clean too!" Reid & Robert Byrd then broke into a rousing duet of "Old Man River" and closed with "Mammy".

Good grief, I don't know whether to laugh at them or feel sorry for them.

Nancy Pelosi Takes Swipe At President Obama's Campaign Promises
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, piqued with White House pressure to accept the Senate health reform bill, threw a rare rhetorical elbow Tuesday at President Barack Obama, questioning his commitment to his 2008 campaign promises.

A leadership aide said it was no accident.

Pelosi emerged from a meeting with her leadership team and committee chairs in the Capitol to face an aggressive throng of reporters who immediately hit her with C-SPAN’s request that she permit closed-door final talks on the bill to be televised.

A reporter reminded the San Francisco Democrat that in 2008, then-candidate Obama opined that all such negotiations be open to C-SPAN cameras.

“There are a number of things he was for on the campaign trail,” quipped Pelosi, who has no intention of making the deliberations public.
As Peter Griffin would say...

"Negro" Race Choice On Census Form Sparks Outrage
A fiery blast from the past is conjuring controversy in the new millennium. The word "negro" is now featured on an official U.S. document and now many are questioning if the Census Bureau is being insensitive.

It's a word that many African Americans associate with segregation, so imagine how shocked many were to see it on the 2010 U.S. census form.

"The fact that it's 2010 and they're still putting 'negro,' I am a little offended," said Secaucus resident Dawud Ingram.
Thank you Democrat Party, Bertha Lewis, and Rham Emanuel (who I assume will be checking the box next to "Hebrew") for a wonderful trip down memory lane to 1950... Do they even listen to themselves when they talk? I'm seeing precious little evidence that they do. Any of my gay sistas going to be checking the box next to "Honky Fag"?

Now Who Are The Bad Guys Again?

Child Soldiers to be Freed From U.N.-Monitored Detention Camps in Nepal
Hundreds of former child soldiers who once fought for Nepal's Maoist rebels will finally be released from the U.N.-monitored detention camps they have called home for the past three years to begin new lives as civilians. [...]

Nearly 20,000 former rebel fighters — formally known as the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) — have lived in seven main camps since 2006, when they gave up their 10-year armed rebellion to join a peace process and enter mainstream politics. U.N. monitors found that 2,975 of the fighters were under 18.
Let me see if I understand this... The United Nations was helping to hold hundreds of children prisoner in Nepal, but America is evil because of Gitmo. Even though the detainees in Cuba come out healthier, better fed, armed with a Koran and prayer rug, and ready to hit the Jihad running stronger than ever. That about it? Thought so...
